Dutch level test
24 questions, about 8 minutes, from A1 to B2. Free and without sign-up. The questions test your Dutch; the prompts are in the language you speak.
Your level and the Dutch exams
Civic integration (inburgering) in the Netherlands, Dutch nationality and Belgian nationality each set their own level. What they are, with the official sources, is in our guide to inburgering and nationality. This test checks vocabulary and reading — not speaking, writing or listening.
How the test works
- Six questions per level, from A1 to B2. You pass a level with 4 of 6; the test stops at the first level you can no longer pass.
- Kinds of question: choose the word or sentence that says what you read in your own language; choose what a sentence means.
- “I don’t know” is better than a guess — a lucky guess can place you a level too high.
- The questions are the same every time, so a retake soon after measures your memory more than your level.
What the levels mean
- A1
- Beginner. You understand everyday words and short, simple sentences. Next: sentences about your day, your family and your plans (A2).
- A2
- Elementary. You understand sentences about everyday topics — family, home, shopping, work. Next: the past, opinions and longer sentences (B1).
- B1
- Intermediate. You understand the main points of clear everyday language, including the past, plans and opinions. Next: complex sentences, the passive and abstract topics (B2).
- B2
- Upper intermediate. You understand complex sentences, opinions and abstract topics. This test stops at B2 — beyond it, longer texts and real conversations tell more.
