What the Dutch integration exams are

A set of exams on the route to permanent residence and naturalisation — and, unlike the Luxembourgish Sproochentest, they test writing too.

Language, all four skills

Reading, listening, writing and speaking. The Wet inburgering 2021 made B1 the standard route, with alternative routes for different starting points — your municipality decides which applies to you.

Knowledge of Dutch Society

KNM is its own exam: how things work here — the gemeente, healthcare, school, work, rights and duties. Set 35 below is exactly that vocabulary.

Or Staatsexamen NT2

The separate, higher route at B1 (Programma I) and B2 (Programma II), used for study and professional work. Same vocabulary foundation, a higher bar.

16Word is a vocabulary app, not an examining body. For registration, dates, fees, exemptions and the official rules, go to Inburgeren.nl (DUO) , DUO and Rijksoverheid . Deliberately, you will find no fees or dates on this page — a stale number here would be worse than none.

Where candidates actually get stuck

Almost never on grammar rules. On a missing word — and most often on the ones that hold a conversation together rather than the ones that name objects.

If you can say “kunt u dat herhalen, alstublieft?” instead of freezing, the examiner hears someone managing Dutch. In Flanders the bar is different again — Belgian naturalisation asks A2 — but the vocabulary that gets you there is the same.

kunt u dat herhalen?ik begrijp het nietkunt u langzamer spreken?wat betekent dat?

16 words a day

One 16-word session a day is roughly 480 words a month passing through active recall — then checked again at 7, 30 and 90 days, so the ones that stick are the ones you keep.

The 40 sets below hold 643 phrases in total.
