Dutch has two words for the: de and het. De is for masculine and feminine nouns (together called common gender), and for every plural; het is for neuter nouns. Een (a) is the same for both. Most nouns take de — but you cannot always tell from the word, so learn the article with the noun.

Always het: diminutives (het huisje), infinitives used as nouns (het eten), languages (het Nederlands), most words in -isme, -ment and -sel. Always de: plurals (de huizen), words in -ing, -heid, -tie, -teit, and most words for people (de man, de vrouw).

Het meisje (the girl) is het because -je is a diminutive — see diminutives.

Grading: the article counts

On 16Word an answer with the wrong article — de huis for het huis — is never forgiven as a typo: it is grammar, and the app shows you why. In the writing exam it is the same.

  4. Group what you learn by topic — our inburgering path has the words of housing, work and health with their articles.
  5. Say them in phrases: het werk, de gemeente, het formulier, de afspraak — the words of the exams.
